How was your playing side?

Patty Beekwilder

Silk is a wonderful toy. It's super smooth, making it glide effortlessly through little hands. It also has a beautiful sheen. That "silky sheen" is less noticeable when you wash silk because of the wrinkles. Since it's a children's toy, you'll want to wash it every now and then. Some people find washing silk daunting, but it's actually quite simple.

So how do you wash your playing silk and get it back to its original shine?

Method 1 - Iron immediately after washing

The play sides are hand-dyed with a natural dye. The colors may bleed slightly when washed. Therefore, wash each color separately by hand.

  • Take a small bowl/sink and use a little bit of detergent for delicate washes.
  • Wash the play side, rinse well and squeeze (do not wring) out most of the water.
  • Heat your iron to the lowest or silk setting.
  • Iron your wet play surface dry and the original shine will be restored instantly.

Method 2 - Dry first, iron later

The same applies to washing. Wash the colors separately to prevent color bleeding. Hand wash the play sides.

  • Take a small bowl/sink and use a little bit of detergent for delicate washes.
  • Wash the play side, rinse well and squeeze (do not wring) out most of the water.
  • Hang them up and let them dry. Don't hang them folded.
  • When you have time to iron, heat your iron to the lowest or silk setting. Spray a little water on the playing surfaces and then iron dry to restore the original shine.

Washing play silk is a chore the toddler and I really enjoy doing together. She gets to play with soap and water, and I have freshly washed play silk again. Win-win situation!

I only purchase natural white, undyed, and unbleached silk. These fabrics, like all the fabrics in my webshop, carry the Oekotex quality mark. To use this quality mark, a company must demonstrate that it uses no environmentally polluting additives or dyes, that energy consumption is optimal, and that wastewater and emissions are properly managed. There must also be no child labor, no dust or noise pollution, and employees must have a safe work environment.

I then hand-paint the playing sides, and they're available in six different colors: red, orange, yellow, green, purple, and blue. You can order them individually or the complete rainbow set , which is slightly more affordable than buying them separately.
